When we got to the judge’s door, he bolted, running out of the courthouse with me in pursuit, much like Olsen did with Scarsdale. He cleared the outside steps and began running. I had one chance to catch him - dive for his legs. When I tackled him, the heel of his foot slammed into my eye - just like Olsen's foot did to Scarsdale.
He kicked at me a few times before I got him off the ground. Not having any handcuffs with me, I managed to hold onto him while he twisted and struggled to get free, again like Olsen did to Scarsdale.
Meanwhile, the clerk in the judge’s office saw the incident and phoned the Sheriff. He and two deputies arrived and took control of the prisoner, bringing the incident to a satisfactory end.
Unable to secure a bag of ice, my eye swelled shut and sported a dark circle around and under it. That’s when the deputies started in on with some good-natured teasing. This wasn’t the first time I received a black eye on duty, but that’s a story for another day.
